Flashback Friday!

March 16, 2012

Every once in a while, i like to venture back to the good old days and reminisce on how wonderful life seemed to be back then when you didn’t know what it meant to have to pay bills.  Of course, I’m an 80’s baby, so for me, there was not a care in the world except, how much change could i scrounge up that day to get loads of penny candy from the local corner store, or how long my mom would let me stay out to play hide-and-go-seek with my friends.  Most of all, i loved to skate!  When i would go as fast as i could  and let the wind blow through my hair, it took me too another place.  Ahhh…how i miss the 80’s.  Here are some of my favorites.  What’s your favorite childhood memory?

Art: The Angle Show

March 14, 2012

Those who know me, knows that music is my first love, my boyfriend for life!  He makes me cry, laugh, jump for joy, dance and makes me feel a whole ‘nother range of emotions.  Although, I do not own the craft or skill of an instrument [tried the bass but, yeah, that’s another story], i have an ear for music.  In some shape or form, i can relate to all genres.  From jazz to pop or country to rock, I listen to it all.  Don’t judge me.  Lol!  With that being said, there is a web-based show called The Angle Show that speaks to me on so many levels!!!  Not only does The Angle feature amazing musicians, but it also touches on politics, visual art, the culture of American people and so much more.  I absolutely love it!  The host is one of the most amazing b-girls i know, nevermind the fact that she is family.  heehee!  Her name is Paige Hernandez-Funn, and she is probably one of the most creative, innovative, talented, dope,  and the absolute biggest lover of music i know.

Paige with my daughter, her niece, Ashanti.

Not only that, she is an actress that has graced many stages like the Kennedy Center, Arena Stage, Everyman Theatre … I mean the list goes on forever.  The girl is bad.

Well now, she is THE host with the most for The Angle Show.  Click here to check out one of my favorite episodes!

About the Angle Show:

“The Angle is an eclectic documentary series that features a variety of topics, people, places or things affecting American Culture—all with a creative twist à la Park Triangle Productions. The series explores subjects from a variety of angles or perspectives and covers a wide range of topics, from food and sex, to religion and modern politics. Personalities run the gamut from intellectuals and activists to artists and the girl next door.

Unlike your typical documentary series, our commentary doesn’t come strictly from experts, but also from everyday people who offer their insights and criticisms, and share their candid opinions, artistic expressions and true life stories.

The Angle enables more voices to be heard, and we don’t shy away from controversy. Prepare to be entertained, inspired and even offended. We are always looking for real world people with interesting stories, ideas, or artistry to contribute to future episodes. Do you have something to say? Then tell us, what’s your angle?”

So without further ado, sit back, relax and enjoy the show.  The Angle Show that is.

psssssssst….spread the word!

While on my trip to NY, me and my girls hit Madison Ave for a little shopping.  Along the way, we decided to stop into Bloomingdales on Lexington Avenue.  Cruising about, i found myself in the Ted Baker section of the store and immediately fell in LOVE!!!

From the vibrant spring colors to the vivid brushstrokes of floral prints, his Spring/Summer 2012 Collection is absolutely to die for.  But one dress in particular caught my eye.  It was a beautiful and elegant, yet simple knee-length white dress called the TELAGO, with gorgeous applique detail and soft tool underneath it to give it a bit of a bell definition.

I literally fell in love with this dress at first sight!  If I were to ever have a Sex in the City moment when Carrie Bradshaw married Big at the Justice of Peace, this is exactly what i would wear.  Look at the detail.  Isn’t it gorgeous?!?  It’s so Audrey modern chic!  Perfection at it’s best!

Ted and me. I was 2 seconds from trying it on!

Hey ladies…and gents!  it’s that time again.  The sun is out, the birds are chirping, the tulips are blooming…summer is almost here!  Woohoo!!!  It is now time for me to come out of hibernation.  to me, that simply means, time to shed my winter weight and be bikini ready within the next couple of months.  I’m by no means, overweight, however there is a such thing as skinny fat and it is so not flattering AT ALL!  I tend to eat pretty healthy, but there are some things in my daily diet that I can stand to be rid of.

As I was driving in to work today, I was listening to a radio show that had a guest on by the name of JJ Smith.  She is a nutritionist and certified weight-management specialist who is a passionate relationship/life coach, and inspirational speaker.  a huge plus…SHE LOOKS AMAZING at 40 something!  Do you see the abs?!?!

She has a book out that has been a top seller on Amazon for a while now, so i figured i would do a little more research.  I went to her website and read all about the secrets of how to lose weight without diet or exercise.  I, for one, am horrible about dieting because I never had to, even after having my baby.  I have always been naturally thin.  Exercise comes naturally.  I’ve always loved running or some sort of cardio however lately, going to the gym has been a chore.  Anyhoo, to fast forward, she spoke about how to lose weight by simply doing a detox.  No, not one of those commercial detox with drinking weird juices that are mailed to you or taking pills that make you literally have to relocate your bed to the nearest bathroom.  Her detox methods are simple and healthy.  She named a few things that you should avoid eating and also some things you can eat for 3 weeks that will ultimately make you lose weight if followed correctly:

What you can’t eat:

  • White starches (white rice, white bread or any other bleached starches)
  • All meats (she didn’t specify seafood, but I’m allergic anyway, so that’s easily avoidable for me.)
  • Pasta
  • Caffeine (coffee, tea, soft drinks, energy drinks, etc.)
  • Dairy
  • Sugar (high fructose corn syrup, raw sugar, brown sugar, pretty much any unnatural sugars because the liver can’t break it down causing it to deposit it into your belly, hips and thighs.)

What you can eat:

  • Fruit (has natural sugars that are easily broken down)
  • Green leafy veggies
  • Beans (the darker the bean, the more antioxidant bonus)
  • Whole grains (oats, brown rice, etc.)
  • Nuts and seeds (almonds are an amazing source of calcium)

So basically, i will be a vegetarian for the next 3 weeks starting on Monday. I’m super excited [Really just trying to sike myself up for a moment.  Lol!]!

Next, there is the workout part.  Although JJ Smith mentions it’s not necessary to workout to lose weight, I’m doing it more so for definition in muscle tone.  I’m not a huge fan of the gym for many reasons.  One being, I feel super out of place and like everyone is watching me do a workout wrong or trying to work a machine resulting in an epic fail, so instead, I decided to try a workout from home.

After watching the infomercial of “Insanity” with trainer Shaun T for about 2 hours, I decided I would do further research on this as well.  After reading several reviews, looking at ‘before’ and ‘after’ pics, and asking everyone I knew about it, I thought I would give it a go.  the price is pretty expensive but I was willing to try it for the 30 day money back guarantee, plus I had the comfort of my own home, so why the heck not right?!

So for the next few weeks, I will keep everyone posted on my improvements if there are any.  EEK!  If you want to try the challenge with me, let me know.  I will begin my detox on Monday, March 19th.  Wish me luck!

I wonder what Steve is thinking in heaven when he heard that Apple is about to release the iPad 3 ALREADY!  I know technology is on a fast forward motion right now but Sheesh.  *falling back a bit*  Ok, so there is the new rave of the ipad 3 but is it too soon?!  i feel like the ipad 2 was just released.  i don’t think people had a chance to even come down from the excitement of that.  And there is the iPhone 5 that was supposed to be released but instead, out came the 4s pretty much the 4 1/2.  Naturally, everyone jumped at the chance to get one, causing Apples stock to go through the roof!  I mean good, for those who have shares.  [smile.  thanks everyone], but now those who have the 4s are kinda pee’d because while they are not up for renewal to get a new phone probably for another year, Apple has decided to release the iPhone 5 this fall.  I mean, that’s great for folks like me that didnt jump at the first chance to get the iphone 4s, but wow!  i really think that with Apple releasing these items so fast, it’s causing people to lose interest in the products now.  Don’t get me wrong, Apple is, to me, the best of the best [while i look at my Android phone that is dying already after it has been charged all day].

At this point, i’m not in a rush to get the iPhone or the iPad anytime soon, because the way things are looking, a new and improved one will be out no sooner than i get the one before it.  Blah!  I guess my MacBook Air will do me just fine for now and i will be sure to carry around my charger for my Android phone at all times until i think i have the newest and improved iPhone.  We’ll see.

Do you have an iPad or iPhone?  If so, which one do you have and do you have any regrets jumping on the purchase?  I’m just curious to know if i am really missing out on anything and give in to the hype.
